Sometimes we feel like we are never satisfied with what we have In the winter, we miss the warmth of summer In the summer, we long for the cool breeze of winter. We wish for things to be different, but we forget to appreciate the beauty of the present moment.
Psychologists have some explanations for this seemingly irrational behavior. One is that we tend to remember the positive aspects of the past more than the negative ones, a cognitive bias known as rosy retrospection; another is that we are simply bored or dissatisfied with the current situation and we seek novelty or change.
Whatever the reason, it seems that we are always longing for something that we don’t have, and we may not appreciate what we have until it’s gone.
But what if we could change our perspective and embrace the changes of life: what if we could see the possibilities and gifts that each new day brings? What if we could learn to be thankful for what we have, rather than what we lack? Maybe then we would realize that happiness is not dependent on the circumstances, but on our mindset. Maybe then we would find joy in every day, no matter how things are.
